ABOUT ROSS

Born in Manitoba then moved to Alberta, Ross Lemon began his studies of the Double Bass in Calgary at the age of 12 at a String program through the CBE and studied with Terry McCarthy for the first couple of years. Ross then went on to then called Mount Royal College Conservatory of Music and studied with Sheila Garrett (retired-assistant principal bass; Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra)(1995-2000) 


As a student, Ross was excelling and being noticed within Calgary’s music scene as a dedicated and enthusiastic student. Introduced and selected to be a bassist with the Calgary Civic Symphony in 1992 at a very young age, Ross fell in love with the orchestra, taking up any chance of playing in a large ensembles. Calgary’s then called Kiwanis music festival, Ross has won a number of solo classes within that competition. He was also selected to perform within double bass masterclasses taught by some of the most prestigious teachers around north america such as; Gary Karr, John Clayton, Lawrence Hurst, and Edger Meyer. 


Ross was then selected out of a number of double bass applicants auditioning for the Calgary Youth Orchestra as Principal Bass as he held that position from 1994-2000 conducted by various prestigious conductors as Nick Pulos, John Thompson, Dr. Glenn Price of Calgary, and guest conductors such as Bramwell Tovey, Hans Graf, Mario Bernardi, Pinchas Zukerman. 

Ross has also been on Calgary Youth Orchestra tours such countries as England, Scotland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Australia, Japan. He was also  proudly featured on CBC Radio Two from a performance of the Eccles Sonata in g-Minor with the Conservatory Strings in the Mount Royal College Academy.  Ross has a Music Performance Diploma (1994), and a Bachelors in Music Performance in Bass (2000). 


Ross has also performed with various orchestras such as Red Deer Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Okanagan Symphony, Symphony of the Kootenays, Vancouver Philharmonic, and an overseas orchestra Manila Symphony Orchestra in the Philippines. 

Performing in orchestras, Ross has also been a part of contract orchestras playing in shows like Video Games Live, Symphony of the Goddess, The Four Tenors, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, just to name a few. Ross is also proud to be a co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra and a Director on its board. 


Today Ross is proud to hold positions in various orchestras and ensembles; Principal Bass-Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra, Principal Bass-Calgary Civic Symphony, Section Bass-Symphony of the Kootenays, Section Bass-University of Calgary Orchestra. Aside from performing, Ross is also an avid private teacher teaching the Double Bass, Cello, and Music Theory in private classes through methodology that works with different age groups. Ross is always excited to share the fruits of wisdom that was passed down to him from his amazing teachers. 


He performs on a 1889 Karl Höfner 5-string bass which has been fully restored by two of the most prestigious string instrument luthiers in Calgary, Natanael Sasaki, and Ross Hill(Aeolian Strings). Aside from music, Ross loves to spend time with his two beloved cats Phillipe and Sebastien, and is also an avid PC Gamer.
